How to tell which finch is which!

My new print of Waxwings, often confused with Finches, released from the ‘A Year In Prints’ Collection, available to buy now

The British Isles are full of beautiful birdlife, and Finches feature highly in the lists of those who love to birdwatch, and those who peer out from kitchen windows, wondering who exactly is feeding on those birdseeds and footballs in their garden.

Finches Finches are small birds with forked or notched tails, fairly pointed wings, rounded or elongated bodies and round heads, and triangular type bills.

The shape of the bill varies depending on the type of food they eat. Some Finches feed while hanging from plants, whilst others are mainly ground feeders, but most Finches will feast on insects from foliage in the breeding season.

You’ll have heard of Chaffinches and Greenfinches, and maybe even Goldfinches, but there are also Crossbills and Bramblings, Linnets and Redpolls, plus a few other types you may not have heard of!

You can read about the types and how to identify Finches here at the Woodland Trust.

Have you had Finches in your garden, or visiting your patio feeders? Let me know!
